Birthday Week

In January I celebrated a rather chilly Birthday that is, it was cold not full of frosty people!   Being an adopted person I always sit quietly for a few minutes on my Birthday before heading out to my party to contemplate the great Birthday ‘journey’ I endure as I face varying amounts of unanswered questions and memories of sadness and loss from long long ago…

Yes, Birthdays for many of us are challenging.

However, I very much want to encourage you to look at your Birthday in the fullness of who you are today, what you have achieved in your personal journey and who you want to become. Rather than get bogged down thinking about circumstances you cannot change, try and say to yourself, ‘yes.. I may have had a humble/difficult start but look how far I have come, and indeed still want to go’.

Love you on your Birthday

Love you on your Birthday

My adoption journey has led me down so many amazing paths and given me a unique perspective on the world. A friend of mine who works for the Met police was saying that every time he takes a fingerprint he still marvels at the uniqueness of humankind, quite simply there will never be another ‘You’.

So in all of your uniqueness rather than looking outward and comparing yourself to other people’s stories, sometimes we have to look inwards and celebrate the fact that love it or hate it your DNA and life story makes you ‘YOU’.

So next Birthday celebrate ‘YOU’. I like so many children who were ‘found’ have an estimated’ Birthday date I was told 8th January but it could be the 7th or the 9th or 10th.. So to be totally certain I make my Birthday a month…! Yep it’s tough… I see friends throughout my Birthday month and celebrate me in all my uniqueness, conquests, triumphs and battles still to win. Learning to accept ourselves and our life stories in all the fullness of it’s colourful shapes and textures is powerful, and will mean that next Birthday there will be even more personal growth, freedom from our past and hope for our future.

Your past doesn’t need to define your future. So whenever your Birthday is make an appointment with yourself to celebrate being ‘You’ and don’t ‘Go compare’ yourself to others when you are beautifully you.
